Understanding Engraving Costs: A Comprehensive Guide for Clients

Laser engraving pricing can often seem complex at first glance. Why does engraving on stainless steel cost more than on wood? How does the total area affect the final price, and what role does file preparation play? In this guide, we disclose the exact factors that determine the cost of your custom work in our Vienna workshop.

The Foundation: Materials and Laser Technology

The primary driver of cost is the material itself. In our Vienna facility, we utilize both CO₂ and Fiber lasers. These technologies differ fundamentally in their wavelength and how they interact with various surfaces.

Organic materials such as wood or leather react efficiently to the CO₂ laser. Here, the material is vaporized by heat, resulting in a high-contrast, dark finish. Metals, however, often reflect the light of a CO₂ laser. To achieve a permanent and precise engraving on aluminum, stainless steel, or gold, we use the Fiber laser. Because the acquisition and operational costs of these machines are higher, this is reflected in the pricing.

Surface Area as a Cost Driver

We calculate our engravings primarily based on the actual processed area in square centimeters (cm²). This is the fairest method as it remains consistent regardless of the object's shape. Whether you require a small logo on a ring or a detailed graphic on a cutting board, the area determines the time the laser beam spends processing the piece.

It is important to note that not only the total area but also the density of the engraving matters. A simple line drawing requires significantly less time than a full-surface raster engraving (such as a photograph), which may influence the calculation for very large projects.

Complexity and Vectorization

A frequently underestimated cost is digital preparation. The laser requires precise paths to know exactly where to cut or engrave. If a file is provided as a JPG or PNG, it often must be manually converted into a vector graphic.

This vectorization process is time-consuming and requires specific graphic design expertise. We offer layout creation by the hour to ensure your logo remains perfectly legible even at the smallest sizes. To avoid these additional costs, we recommend submitting ready-to-use .svg or .pdf files. For more details, please refer to our guide on preparing files for laser.

Material Group Price per cm² (incl. 20% VAT) Characteristics
Wood & Leather 1.50 € High contrast, organic finish
Glass & Metal 2.80 € Fiber Laser technology

Minimum Order Values and Fixed Costs

To maintain the sustainable operation of our workshop in Vienna, we have a minimum order value of 25 €. This covers the setup time required for every project, regardless of whether it is a single engraving or a large series. Setup time includes clamping the workpiece, focusing the laser, and performing a test run.

For large corporate orders, we often provide tiered pricing because the setup time is distributed across many units. For B2B clients, we offer a payment term of 14 days after invoicing.

Checklist for Your Price Request

To help us provide you with an exact quote, please have the following information ready:

  • Material: What is the object made of? (e.g., Oak wood, 304 Stainless Steel, Acrylic)
  • Dimensions: What is the size of the area to be engraved in mm or cm?
  • File: Is the logo available as a vector file, or does it need vectorization?
  • Quantity: Is this a one-off piece or a production series?
  • Deadline: Is this a regular order (5-7 days) or is express production required?

Local Specifics in Vienna

As a local provider in Vienna, we value short distances and personal consultation. Many of our clients bring their workpieces directly to our workshop in Margareten. This eliminates shipping costs and allows us to verify material samples in person. In Austria, the correct disclosure of Value Added Tax (20%) is legally required, which is why we transparently list both gross and net amounts in all our price lists.

Summary of the Cost Structure

In summary, the price for your engraving consists of three main components:

  1. Material/Machine Usage: Based on the area (cm²) and the material type.
  2. Preparation: Any hours required for layout adjustments and vectorization.
  3. Processing: Minimum order value and potential express surcharges of 30% for very short deadlines.

We believe in fair and transparent pricing without hidden fees. If you are unsure how your project will be calculated, we invite you to contact us.
